Took a 3.5 Kayak trip to Thumb Cove w Guide Amber. She was awesome! Hi energy and could tell she loved her job. We had spectacular views and water was so clear! Just beautiful. Saw several eagles and the salmon were just starting to run so there were bunches!! A little disappointed that we didn't see more wild life but it was still a fantastic trip. The kayaking time was just long enough for us we not so great knees and a hip. So worth the price! We used their sea taxi services. They told us to be ready on the beach by 4pm and they'd be there latest at 4:30. They didn't show up until 5pm. We waited in the freezing rain. They also charged an adult price for my one year old even though he didn't take up a seat. Even the sea captain told us we could go talk to the manager about it but the manager was extremely rude. I wouldn't have asked if one of their employees hadn't volunteered the information. One of their competitors told us "I would never recommend Miller's Landing" and I can see why since they left such a bad taste in my mouth. It's a good thing I didn't tell them I was pregnant or they would've charged $50 for that too. My parents live in Alaska and they certainly won't be recommending them either. Won't rent single kayaks. Good location, cabin was nice with the loft and wood stove. The bathrooms were good. We had assumed based on what their website says that we would be able to rent some single kayaks. An older lady with a European accent said the weather was too bad (just rain) and they couldn't accept the liability. Very disappointing! This place is off the beaten path and has a lot going for it, despite some deficiencies. First off, it's kinda rustic and a little run down, but it does attract a large number of tent campers, which reminds me of camping in the old days. The camping area is a maze of small dirt lanes roughly carved out of a mature hemlock forest with glacial till soil. Level and smooth ground is at a premium. The campsites were quite full both times I have been there, and a cozy pleasant atmosphere pervades with the fragrant scent of spruce wood campfires, and folks sitting around enjoying conversation and food. The crowd tends to be younger, so more noise, even after quiet hours Though in my couple of nights stay there the noise was generally tolerable, being mostly the sounds of happy people, though it went late into the evening. There is noise of a different kind which you may or may not enjoy; crow-like birds making a heck of a racket in the early morning. I found it tolerable and pleasantly adding to the campsite ambience until one landed on the picnic table outside my tent! Actually, I can laugh about that now. It was pretty funny. Here is what really lacks: the bathroom. Though newer, is not up to the needs of the large number of campers, stays very busy and challenging to keep clean. I didn't considered it unsanitary, just overly used. They were also very spartan. For example: you will be forced to stuff your towel, clothes, and toiletries, upon a tiny shelf next to the counterless sink while you brush your teeth and stoop down to see yourself in an overly low hanging mirror, while in plain sight of folks in the hallway because there isn't a door. It is a diamond in the rough. I might go back someday. Despite the inconveniences it has a lot of charm. Very disappointed with fishing trip experience and hate to say, would not recommend based on this one time. Called 3 hours ahead out of Anchorage to say we would be there on time, so far so good. Called 30 minutes before trip to say we were in town, told look forward to seeing us Buy licenses at location and met other person joining us on trip around 11:45 am as boat trip scheduled from 12-4. Around 12: 30 pm, no word about delay so inquired at desk and told trip cancelled because morning trip( 7-11) experienced engine problems. Other boat traveler not aware either. Asked for refund and told they would take care of it but it took 30 minutes for them to show it was done. Frustration comes from lack of communication and caring. No phone call to say trip cancelled nothing said when I called twice, nothing said when licenses purchased at 11;30 and nothing said until inquiry made 30 minutes after boat was supposed to leave. Travelled 700 + miles for trip but lack of apology is what made this writer respond to inquiry about rating my experience.
